Peritoneal cancer can result from different diseases. The commonest of which are pseudomyxoma peritonei, appendicular cancer & ovarian cancer. These cancers affect the inner lining of the abdomen called 'peritoneum'.
When fluid & tumour cells develop inside the abdomen, there will be swelling of the tummy. Pain & vomiting can occur. Weight loss can occur secondary to tumour & reduced food intake.
HIPEC Surgery is an operation by which a HIPEC surgeon removes the entire peritoneum ladden with the disease. A special cautery tip (ball point cautery) is used to effectively complete the procedure. The operation usually takes 4 to 8 hours, depending upon the amount of the tumour. Various surgical steps have been shown in the images below.
Following the surgical removal of the disease, HIPEC treatment is given. HIPEC is Heated Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy. HIPEC machine provides heat to cancer chemotherapy which is then circulated inside the tummy to kill the remaining small cancer cells. The procedure takes 1 to 2 hours. The advantage of this treatment is two fold, one the heated medicine kills cancer cells better & second it has minimum systemic side effects.
